Postoperative Instructions
Important
We have just performed minor surgery in your mouth. It is important to follow these instructions to minimize the risk of complications and ensure a faster recovery.
FOR THE NEXT 24 TO 48 HOURS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO:
- DO NOT SMOKE
- DO NOT DISTURB THE WOUND
- DO NOT ENGAGE IN STRENUOUS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR 1 WEEK.
Pain
In the days following oral surgery, some pain is completely normal. The intensity of the pain can vary from person to person and depending on the nature of the procedure. You have been prescribed or advised to take pain relievers to relieve this pain as much as possible.
Swelling
There may be swelling and even bruising at the surgical site. For the first 24 hours, apply ice to the affected side of your face for 20 minutes every hour to reduce the swelling. If you have had a bone graft, it is normal to experience swelling.
Oral Care
Clean your mouth as usual, taking care not to touch the wound. Your mouth must remain clean to aid healing. You can remove plaque from the surrounding teeth using a “Q-TIPS.” After 24 to 48 hours, it is recommended that you rinse your mouth with lukewarm salt water.
Care
An avulsed tooth is a tooth that has been completely dislodged from its socket. Most often, people go to the dentist to have the tooth reimplanted. In this case, the same recommendations apply regarding how to preserve the tooth, but the chances of success decrease with every minute that passes after the tooth is dislodged.
