It addresses various conditions, including gingivitis, periodontitis, periodontal pockets, bleeding gums, and gum recession. This discipline combines therapeutic and aesthetic approaches, often aiming to restore or reshape damaged gums.

The main procedures in periodontics include:

Root planing and scaling

Operculectomy

Connective tissue graft

Free or allogeneic gingival graft

Root Planing and Scaling

Root planing and scaling are non-surgical procedures designed to disinfect tissues affected by periodontitis. They remove bacteria and tartar deposits from periodontal pockets and along the roots of the teeth. Performed in conjunction with scaling, these treatments promote the reattachment of the gums to the teeth once the procedures are complete.

Benefits:

A minimally invasive method with widely recognized effectiveness.

Reduces inflammation and stops bleeding.

Preserves the supporting bone.

Prevents the need for more invasive treatments in the future.

Limits the spread of bacteria to the rest of the body, reducing the risk of lung infections or heart problems.

Performed under local anesthesia, scaling and root planing generally require 2 to 4 sessions, depending on the severity of the condition and the number of teeth involved. Bacteria and tartar are removed using precision curettes or ultrasonic instruments, and scaling is performed to scrape the tissue inside the periodontal pockets. To complete the disinfection process, the pockets may be irrigated with an antiseptic or antibiotic, or a laser may be used to optimize decontamination.

Gum Graft

A gum graft restores the gum tissue in front of teeth with exposed roots, reducing receding gums and sensitivity.
